For adults with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementia-related disorders, Residential Plaza offers affordable, 24-hour specialized care. Our newly renovated Memory Care Unit consists of two floors, converted and divided into four individual households which house only a dozen or so patients each, in order to better support person-centered care programming for residents.
All spaces are designed to meet the needs of the Alzheimer’s/Dementia population, integrating a home like environment with person-centered care programming. This specialized environment includes functional kitchens, social gathering areas, and outside spaces where residents can gather and participate in activities. Private living quarters and dining rooms are more spacious, providing an environment in which residents can move and live with the most possible ease, comfort, and independence.
We developed this unit under the guidance and supervision of Jennifer Brush, MA, CCC/SLP, an internationally recognized speaker/educator and speech-language pathologist, known for her work in the area of dementia. Our Memory Care Unit is based on the Montessori for Aging and Dementia philosophy, an innovative approach to dementia care with the goal of supporting people with dementia by treating them with respect and dignity – enabling them to make choices and to live as independently as possible.
Our staff is trained to collaborate with the Memory Care Unit residents to create meaningful activities and roles for people with dementia, foster social connections and friendships, repeat activities to develop routine, build confidence and self-esteem, as well as provide cues, prompts, manipulatives and templates to support the person’s memory loss, among other things.
Research has provided clear evidence of increased levels of engagement in activities when Montessori approaches are implemented and associated decreases in the behaviors of unmet needs when people are actively engaged in meaningful activity.
